How Controlling Your Nutrition is Like Controlling Your Finances

In a world where people want immediate gratification, make impulse decisions, and are extremely busy, it is hard to be successful in all aspects of life.  Americans are known to struggle with obesity and to also be massively in debt.

“An estimated 160 Million Americans are either obese or overweight,” states healthdata.org.

“80% of Americans have debt with an average personal debt of $90,406,” according to Dave Ramsey.

I am seeing a correlation to one’s ability to control their nutrition and its similarities to controlling their finances.

“I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it,” sings Ariana Grande.

This could be the theme song for most Americans!  And with fast food restaurants thriving; companies like Uber Eats and Door Dash enabling you to order from any restaurant at the click of a button, Americans can satisfy their cravings easier than ever.  We can also spend money easier than ever.  Online shopping fueled by social media promotions and influencers, trigger purchases at any hour of the day.

Humans do not like to feel pain and often make decisions based on their emotions.  Terms like “stress eating” and “retail therapy” are commonly known and accepted.  Americans are unable to handle stress which often leads to impulse decisions to distract themselves.

Americans are also very busy.  The US is the most overworked developed nation in the world.  Because of this our happiness, health, and mental clarity are severely affected.  Our priorities are skewed, and we are living in a survival mode.  Americans are unhappy with their bodies and also unhappy with their bank accounts.

So, what do we do?  How do we take control?

Here are 5 way to improve your health and fitness and/or your finances:

  • Develop a plan - If you don’t have the knowledge base to do this, you should hire a professional.

  • Take detailed logs -Write down everything you eat or spend to learn what works or doesn’t work. This will also provide you accountability to do better.  Downloading Apps such as MyFitnessPal or Every Dollar are great tools to easily track.

  • Focus on the long term goals over the short term gains - Lifestyle changes that are sustainable take time. Focus on your long term goals while celebrating your short term victories along the way.  Great long term goals would be overall health and wellness, longevity, and a comfortable retirement.

  • Do not fall victim to the latest trends -There will always be a new trendy workout or diet, and there will always be the latest fashion, home décor, or technology that you feel pressured to buy. Never follow exactly what others are doing, and cater to your personal needs or abilities.  Comparison does not get you anywhere, and like Dave Ramsey says, “If you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else.”

  • Do not go “All or Nothing” -Keep a healthy perspective as you develop new healthy habits. Go at your pace and maintain a balance allowing cheat meals or fun purchases.

Focusing on improving your health and fitness can positively affect all aspects of your life.  And while not all fit people are debt free, learning how to budget your calories or macros can also inspire you to budget your finances.
